It's a murder story about a ruthless serial killer, so you often have the aftermath of graphic violence described to you. The titular Devil Six's pasts aren't pretty either, lots of murder, body mutilation, and rape in one case. Often, you have forewarning to whenever something gruesome will show up.

Violence that occurs in present tense is in the second half, and there's one instance that is brief but graphic. But like the first half, you can predict when the violence will happen. It's not in excess, but there is a handful. I wouldn't say that it goes into rated R splatter film territory all the time though, so there's that for you to consider.(less)

Can anyone remind me the providence of the bead? Where did it come from and why was it so important to Mr. Hobbs? (I returned the audio book from the library so I can't go back and trace this). Was it merely a plot device, or was there deeper meaning to the bead?
