He talks about the redactions:
"I want to make sure I was honoring my former security clearances, and even though this is fiction, the protagonist has a background similar to mine, and obviously I tap into my experience as I write. So, I want to make sure I was doing the right thing. And they take seven months to do a 30-day review! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. They advertise 30 days. One month passed... Two months passed... Three months passsed... I guess they're not big readers over there at DoD, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone! But yeah, they took a took a long time, and they took 57 sentences out this time. But they took one part out that was just a country and I'd never been to this country in uniform. I'd been there years before I joined the military, so I could describe the mountains. I could describe the architecture. I knew it enough to describe it in a novel, and it made sense geographically for what was happening in the second book, and they took out every reference to it! They took out the reference to the architecture, to the mountains. But once again, being the government they forgot to take out the capital cities of said country. But knowing their intent, I help them out and I black that part out out for them. But yeah, once again they took out a country that I'd never been to in uniform and that's just kind of how it goes. So I'm appealing at this time and I will see what, if we win anything on appeal. And most every single sentence in there my lawyers have found in publicly available government documents, so we're tying each and every sentence that they took out into those publicly available documents to see if we can win on appeal."(less)

Background can be added to subsequent books, but reading them as they were written gives the characters an overall completeness. In a military thriller it is important to understand the characters motivations and mindset. (less)
