While the story is simple enough on the surface to serve as a good old-fashioned adventure to inspire young boys to dream, introducing them to concepts like honor and heroism, it also has more depth than it is typically credited as having. As an adult, I admire the story because it is a wonderful window into the psyche of ERB himself. This is true for the Barsoom books in general, especially "The Gods of Mars". (less)

This is the first book in the series and it is my second favorite I loved how it showed him grow and get use to the way things are on mars I fell in love with the characters and the plot and kept getting sucked in the more and more I read?
Julio Bonilla Likewise. Where he met again with Woola and his opponent from the arena, it started to feel reminiscent of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Benjamin Nothing. He arrived completely naked and stayed mostly that way the entire time, just picking up various medals and such from warlords he killed.
