While the story is simple enough on the surface to serve as a good old-fashioned adventure to inspire young boys to dream, introducing them to concepts like honor and heroism, it also has more depth than it is typically credited as having. As an adult, I admire the story because it is a wonderful window into the psyche of ERB himself. This is true for the Barsoom books in general, especially "The Gods of Mars". (less)
