I've read the first two sections of the novel which seem to be two separate threads so far. Are they meant to be separate stories or do they intersect at some point?

Sofija They do intersect... but IMO not very well. It is a lovely book, but a deeper connection between stories is lacking.

Unanswered Questions (1)

I am in the middle of the dancing bear story and finding it difficult to read. His treatment of the bear (and his wife) is just horrifying. The piercing of bear's nose--just heartbreaking! There is nothing at all to balance this character and he just seems like a horrible person. I'm wondering why am I putting myself through this misery? Does it get less awful to read? Should I press on?
