Chandra is a professional writer, the shantaram guy led a very interesting and brave life no-one would deny, but that doesn't make you a writer. Most of them have fairly boring lives because it's hard, long and focussed work to achieve anything good. I think the tempo and length of Sacred Games is perfect. I wish it hadn't ended.(less)

Upon second reading it occurs to me that Vikram Chandra is showing us a sub-continent sadly divided by partition. Sartaj has family over the border, The two countries are but one. While they fight they allow a fanatic to set a bomb which could have disastrous consequences for everybody in the region.
It is the hostility between the two that gave Gaitonde the power to help Guruji pursue his deadly plans. When Gaitonde realizes that he has been manipulated he abandons Guruji. When Gaitonde dies it may have all been in vain, but Gaitonde is ultimately redeemed by Sartaj. (less)
