"...Ann dance with a blonde man who asked for advice about his girlfriend and Ann found herself feeling wise and she asked the man questions about love and how he felt and answering them for herself passed the test with Harris and felt this man, this blonde man whose name she did not know, was just another element pointing her toward Harris and she felt she gave him something back too, whoever he was, and he nodded thoughtfully."
The item in the bag appeared to be a heart that he must have thought as a cure. He states his name is John Winter, that he met Ann at a wedding & she offered him advice regarding his girlfriend and that he never forgot her advice. He said he felt he loved her & trusted her even though they didn't laugh together. He married her & after 18 years they divorced...he said he should have listened to Ann.
I don't see that Ann & Harris laughed much, but even at the end of her life she still felt she missed the right man. I thought he was a womanizer to start up with her when he was already engaged & don't recall them having that much fun laughing.
I would never have finished this book except I was stuck in a doctors office & it was the only thing I had to read. By then I felt I had too much time invested not get to get to the end. That said, this answer has more punctuation than the whole book. (less)
