It was used as a convenient plot device to show how bad these gold blood girls have it, and convenient bouts of PTSD for the lead.

While yes, as others say, it is supposed to give the female lead a reason why she must lead a revolt, it is handled so poorly that it just barely makes sense. The extreme abuse is often brushed off and the lead later commits SELF abuse for the good of the "cause".

I get what the author was trying to do, but the execution was highly problematic.(less)
Matthew Mostly YA tone, but there is one particular scene with a vivid description of child abuse, and a few times where graphic violence is described.
