You should have further recognized the addition of the suffix -i for the singular "jaani" vs. the plural "jaan", and the same suffix for Menna's and her colleague's profession(s). I'm betting that word is also Arabic-sourced, but unlike you, I know essentially no Arabic, only some of its reflections in English.

Including spelling. I assume, as I hope your narrator executed, that the city-state Ghadid's name starts with the voiced counterpart of the unvoiced sound that Bach's name ends with.(less)
