I've read a good bit of Gallant but have never encountered anything like the seemingly entirely unrelated asides that start manifesting once the train in the title story enters Germany: inserted narratives about two couples in Elmhurst, NY and a party of castle visitors out in the countryside but observed from the train. I'm having quite a lot of trouble with the unrelatedness of these disruptions in the narrative?
