I really didn't make a decision to write in the first person to tell Wes' story. I'd been following a news story about a mother who had tragically and horrifically taken her own child's life. All I wanted was for that boy to have had a chance to live a full life. When I started work on WINTER LOON, I was thinking about that child and his mother, what would make her do such an awful thing. And Wes' voice came to me. So while it is his story, it's also Valerie's and Ruby's and the story of all the women who sheltered and shaped Wes.(less)
