What a terrific writer! I like magic realism, but I'm having troubles with some of the details of this book. Please help me understand about the back door of the cafe and Mariam's pregnancy and birth of her child.... Will you? Can you?!

Mariam came in a desperate adult, needing healing, through the front door, and the baby has to go out the back. Also the "back door" concept means a lot to black people, because they always had to go in and out the back, even if they had the Master's children. Now so many of us are The Help, and we have to go in and out the back, too. (less)
