I enjoyed this a lot but at the end of the book I still didn't know who Abby's mother was! Maybe I fell asleep and missed it! Can anyone tell me, please?

Just as he doesn't know many of the childrens names so would many of the mothers be irrelevant. We know for sure that David North is Abby's grandfather. His mother seems to have been either an alcoholic or an epileptic but certainly someone who struggled with life and found her child difficult to relate to, but then she had a final fall an probably died but certainly was never given the care of Abby again. Thats why the social worker managed to trace Katherine and Clive who presumably adopted her as the girls nearest relatives. Hope this helps. Brilliant book - deserves a second read for sure.(less)
