I hear tell this is inspired by Russia and Russian culture, but what are we talking here? Is it to the level of the Winternight trilogy (extremely well researched) or the Grisha trilogy (a few googled words and names)?

It was a magnificently done book and needed to be very grounded in true Russia since the magical world and the real world rested so close together. I did spend a lot of time embroiled in Russian mythology, specifically the myths surrounding the brother gods Chernobog and Belobog who the bright and the pale gods are loosely based off of in my novel. I also wove in ideas of Koschei the Deathless, in the idea that the gods cannot be killed because they hide their hearts and souls. I also did a lot of research into the trade of Novgorod to make the world feel real and not inside a vacuum. But at the end of the day, its entirely fictional and a world I made up based off these ideas, and not similar to Winternight in using real world Russia as a touchstone. Perhaps someday I will be able to write something as brilliant as Katherine Arden has! Thank you for your question! (less)

I have the fairyloot book and I was just wondering who is on the dustjacket. I can guess Alik and Matvei. I'm guessing the girl with bangs is Valeria. Who is the other white haired pale chic? And why on the back of the author note is Valeria laying in the snow in a gorgeous red dress? What have I missed?

Jessica Rubinkowski I would say there are some violent scenes at the very end, within the last twenty or so pages.
