It was a magnificently done book and needed to be very grounded in true Russia since the magical world and the real world rested so close together. I did spend a lot of time embroiled in Russian mythology, specifically the myths surrounding the brother gods Chernobog and Belobog who the bright and the pale gods are loosely based off of in my novel. I also wove in ideas of Koschei the Deathless, in the idea that the gods cannot be killed because they hide their hearts and souls. I also did a lot of research into the trade of Novgorod to make the world feel real and not inside a vacuum. But at the end of the day, its entirely fictional and a world I made up based off these ideas, and not similar to Winternight in using real world Russia as a touchstone. Perhaps someday I will be able to write something as brilliant as Katherine Arden has! Thank you for your question! (less)
Jessica Rubinkowski Hi! Thank you so much for your question. It is a duology, the second book set to come out in March of 2022!

The two on the other side are the Bright and the Pale Gods (one with long white hair is the Pale God). I think the author note image is just creative liberty! It doesn't happen in the book, but it is beautiful! I hope that helped :) (less)
Jessica Rubinkowski I would say there are some violent scenes at the very end, within the last twenty or so pages.
