I think the trouble is that keeping Rebus in a sideline role prevents any of the other characters from coming good, or even being really interesting because they just can't be better than Rebus is. But that means that any parts of the book that don't feature Rebus - which is most of this one - are, as you say, lacklustre.(less)

As can be expected, there are minor spoilers regarding previous books of the series but nothing major as far as I can remember. The Waterstones special edition does include an "interview" with John Rebus though, that you might want to stay away from if you are planning to read more of the books.(less)
