Throughout the book I wondered how much Maisie had advanced in age. Did anyone else have the thought that Sir Claude and Maisie may get together as a couple when she was older?

E Oh, yes. After Mrs. Beale gets bored with him, he’ll be back in Maisie’s life. She will have another difficult choice to make.

i cant tell whats going on in this book. is the reader supposed to be confused and in the dark? or is this just full of subtleties that are lost on a modern reader? or is James just being too opaque for me?

When, in his career, did James write this book?

Why do so many complain about difficult books? There is something operating here, called respect for art. Personally, I get more from Henry James than from Jane Austen, whose novels, other than Persuasion, I close with considerable frustration. I care more about what Maisie knows that whom Emma Woodhouse catches.
