He tells her when she finds him at Keller's the first time ("Remember, I told you..." he says), and he tells her that he had a conversation with her that she didn't remember. Hannah was a deep sleeper and a huge snorer, so that's how she never knew. David only sees her truly sleepwalking once, and tells her "You really scared me, Sylvie! What was that?"

At one point, Sylvie says to Thom, "I don't know how to wake up," and he says, "Don't. You can wake up in the morning." He knew she was asleep, but she acted so conscious, and he took advantage of her a bit.

If you go back and re-read it (I did), you can see that everyone was trying to tell her, all along. Except Keller, which makes him the most truly unlikeable character.(less)
