Yes, Jane has spent years trying to put one foot in front of the other, plodding, as you put it. Believing she has to do her duty even if her heart isn't in it. Her guilt is also very strong, and showing up to do her duty anyway, with Matt and especially with Lucy, is a way of compensating and rationalizing. After therapy, and finally allowing herself to get close to Lucy, to risk the hurt loving her entails, Jane's finally able to give herself credit for doing the best she could (something I think is hard for many women, and imagine that the future might be differently if she acts to make it so.
