I am really interested in reading this book. There are so many five star ratings and the overall average rating at 4.33 (2,700 ratings) would ordinarily dictate a book worth reading. The only reason I haven't as yet, is because I'm thinking that an absence of a military background may make this a difficult read. The book is quite long at 1291 pages and I don't want to struggle if it is too specifically military?

It is 'military heavy' in the sense that the entire theme of the novel is the great conflicts of the 20th Century, but it is not saturated with the military jargon and niche vocabulary which that world would've very much sounded like. This novel is timeless, and one of the best pieces of military fiction probably ever written. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend you do. How different our world would be if there were more men like Sam Damon.(less)

in the section about Damon's posting in the Philippines, there's a mention of a bullet found by Brand with a hole drilled in it and the gunpowder leeched out. but as far as i can, the meaning of this is never explained. does anyone know what this is supposed to mean?
