While the abridged keeps the storyline intact, it lacks so much depth, and misses so many points the author was making.(less)

I am taking this slow to understand better what the writer is trying to convey. Plus there is alot of time period information that I am not familiar with. It's not near as action oriented as the movie shows it to be. Does anyone else have trouble digesting this writing style?

I want to read the novel to properly judge the movies that are based upon it. However, I do not know which version to read. Are there really five books? Is the entire story over one thousand pages? Or is it only around six-hundred? Which is the most popular version that I should read?
