I people-watch all the time, and if I see someone walking down the street that jumps out at me, I'll use their physical traits or mannerisms. Whenever I use someone I know the character usually morphs into someone completely new by the third or fourth draft. There will still be echoes of that person, but no one is ever totally captured, if that makes sense. But I'm glad that the characters feel familiar to you! That's a lovely compliment.
As far as writing off of current turmoil... I avoid it. I don't want my story to feel topical. But there's also no way that some of it doesn't seep in, and a lot of the things I'm passionate about are trending topics. A big thing in The Unbound Trilogy is not only how humans would cope in a moral grey area, but how they would behave without the "eyes of society." How would people have purpose without an online presence, and how would men and women interact if there wasn't a civilization that held them somewhat accountable. Obviously, current movements (metoo, standwithher) have similar undertones, but I didn't set out to write about them. Sorry if that was long-winded, let me know if it doesn't make sense. (less)
