1) Did Natalie's adoptive parents in Bucharest ever leave the country for the West? When did they die?
2) Who would leave a child of three, maybe four, in the middle of gunfire and the curfew and dead bodies lining the streets?
3) What would you sacrifice to save your only child?
4) How lucky was she that she found loving parents so quickly while other children languished in the orphanage?
5) What happened to Stefan and Maria, the aunt and uncle who conveniently have connections with doctors, orphanages and Switzerland? Were they also swept up by the Russians?
6) What about the neighbor in their communal flat who was savagely beaten by her husband?
7) Did you know that the book is based on the story of the author’s own mother?
8) Does Victor come back?
9) Did you realise was how long Romania suffered after the war, behind the Iron Curtain?
10) Why include the romance? Was there any point to it?
11) Isn't it interesting, that during those dreadful six years, all people wished was for the war to be over? However, no one ever thought of the consequences and how the aftermath of the war will affect their lives.

The story follows her family history up until her romance with Victor. At that point, it's not what she called "her mother's story" at that point where Victor comes back into play when Natalia is about 20.(less)
