If you read the author's website and articles that she has written about her fascination with Daphne du Maurier's original work, you understand her own motivation for her retelling.
Literature builds off of other literature frequently. How often do fairy tales pop up in modern writing? Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch follows the structure of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. If we stopped trying to modernize art, we would experience an outdated form of it. How often are movies reformatted and retold from a different perspective, with new technologies?
If Lisa Gabriele was stealing, I'm fairly certain she would want to disguise her intentions a bit more. She probably wouldn't have kept the name "The Winters" and main plot points. If she was truly stealing, she absolutely wouldn't have admitted to being inspired by du Maurier's work and current events. Next time, try and do more research before you attack an author for being very blatant in her intentions. It makes you look foolish. (less)
