Yes and no because the love that develops between the two main characters is 'forbidden' because the German officer is the occupier and the girl and her uncle are the victims of occupied France. It's more about how silence says so much more than words, in love, war etc.. I read it at school (between 13 and 16) and it has become my favourite French book of all time. (less)
