It's not like you would not enjoy the book without the Show, but it's like the middle episode of the show. You should at least see the beginning of the show, so you will get the introduction of the characters (the book barely cover the backstories for the characters and it is an enseble piece).

My advice: Watch the TV show, fell in love, dive into books and comics if you feel empty after the cancellation. This is a fine book, but it definitely works better as a continuation we never got.(less)

It fits the niche for more Firefly stories without having to happen after the events of the movie (which gave good closure, but didn't leave room for any more stories). This is the only one I've read so far, but it was so much fun. I could hear the original characters' voices in my head. The Audiobooks should be narrated by Nathan Fillion.(less)

Apparently Nancy Holder wrote it, but was unable to finish and James provided. I think it's decent he's maintaining most of the credit with her and I'm thrilled he was able to see it through where she could not.(less)
