Why do you think Grisham had to go into so much detail about the war story? I don’t think it really was that relevant to the plot and was way too long and graphic. It was not his usual style and I was disappointed with the book.

The details about the war were riveting. However, the ending did not live up to the rest of the book. I was disappointed. I would give it 4 stars for the details of the war, and 2 stars for the ending. How do others feel?

In part 3, I just felt like "massive depressing thing" happened to his kids, and then more "massive depressing thing" and then? You guessed it, more "massive depressing thing" so I was expecting the end to somewhat explain a twist as to why the preacher had to die and why Pete did it and why his wife can now get out of the asylum and lead a somewhat happy life! But no, just more "massive depressing thing". Frustrating.(less)

First, I loved the book. But...am I the only one who felt the whole section on the wrongful death lawsuit was just wasted filler? It seemed to me that an editor said, "It's a Grisham book. People expect lawyer stuff. You need to add more lawyer stuff."

It seemed to me that the excruciatingly detailed war story (with the graphic torture and starvation of American POWs) was added to the murder mystery to make it a longer book. It could have been left out almost entirely. Or written as a different book. I have read everything Grisham has written, but this is the first one that I do not feel like recommending to anyone. I was really disappointed. He is an excellent writer, but I only gave this one 3 stars because I did not feel it was as good as most of his other books.(less)
