In part 3, I just felt like "massive depressing thing" happened to his kids, and then more "massive depressing thing" and then? You guessed it, more "massive depressing thing" so I was expecting the end to somewhat explain a twist as to why the preacher had to die and why Pete did it and why his wife can now get out of the asylum and lead a somewhat happy life! But no, just more "massive depressing thing". Frustrating.(less)

It seemed to me that the excruciatingly detailed war story (with the graphic torture and starvation of American POWs) was added to the murder mystery to make it a longer book. It could have been left out almost entirely. Or written as a different book. I have read everything Grisham has written, but this is the first one that I do not feel like recommending to anyone. I was really disappointed. He is an excellent writer, but I only gave this one 3 stars because I did not feel it was as good as most of his other books.(less)
