I'm not from a small town or particularly prejudiced area. I simply live in the US, where bigotry is ubiquitous. I think it is strange for anyone to presume that, in the current American climate, authors like King wouldn't write about homophobia. As a constant reader, I've seen him write about social justice issues often. Also, as queer issues are currently a hot topic, it only makes sense that they would be on his mind. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that ignoring homophobia is what spreads homophobia. It does not make someone appear more evolved if they pretend that homophobia is over. I hope that doesn't come off too harshly but I do worry that this is an issue of "not seeing race/gender/sexuality." Of course I haven't read the novel yet because it comes out in the fall but I don't think that makes this answer any less valid. I assure you, the premise of this novel could happen in many places around the country right now. (less)

The book is both poignant and sad. For anyone out there who has grown up in a small town, he has Castle Rock down on all of the details including both the complicated and uncomplicated interrelationships among the townfolk. I really loved Dr. Bob and his compassion for his friend. I found the desire of one person to "elevate" the community as a place that becomes more accepting really uplifting. I don't think there's a political statement here, but perhaps a turning away from the current climate of looking at what sets us apart rather than what makes us different. I love King's deep humanity. I am under the spell of this little volume. It touched me deeply.

Steven Cross Rising above a world of prejudice to do the right thing even if it destroys you. If you do the right thing, you can at least go out with a bang.
