Does he have a more serious heal…moreI thought the author left that issue open for us to consider. Is he depressed? Probably. Is he malnourished? Perhaps. Does he have a more serious health problem? Maybe. A big part of his symptoms seemed, to me, to be caused by frustration, ennui, simmering anger, shame, fear, and loneliness; as a teenager, I suffered all of these and had physical symptoms like headaches and ulcers. The psychological and physical are certainly connected. There might be a diagnosis in the novel if Edwin, his parents, or his school had pursued the issue more aggressively -- which they probably do after the novel's climax. (less)
