Does Shepard have any particular mental or physical condition in mind when he describes Edwin's headaches, insomnia, and lack of appetite? It seems like there would be a diagnosis there. What about Flake, about whom very little is mentioned? He would seem to show more psychological symptoms than physical ones.

Maybe. A big part of his symptoms seemed, to me, to be caused by frustration, ennui, simmering anger, shame, fear, and loneliness; as a teenager, I suffered all of these and had physical symptoms like headaches and ulcers. The psychological and physical are certainly connected. There might be a diagnosis in the novel if Edwin, his parents, or his school had pursued the issue more aggressively -- which they probably do after the novel's climax. (less)
