I had seen this book numerous times over the years, here and there. I recently bought a copy for a well-spent 50 cents, and just finished it with my head spinning. The ease in which journeys of weeks, and the constant movements, place one in an entirely different setting an understanding, among people of enduring patience. I doubt that I would accept this, or perhaps any account, as a completely accurate description of pre-contact or even 1800's Plains Tribal 'way of life' if that is what one is looking for. We really cannot know, I think. But as Lt. Timberlake and James Mooney described (criticized), the ways of thinking even after socialization with Europeans, were so different, that it was often hard for one set of groups to understand the other in general, let alone the pluralities within each group.(less)
