I think Blume was trying to get across that even though Kathryn was young and very much in love with Michael, it didn't work out. Not because anything bad happened but just because. It's life. She wanted her readers to understand that it's okay for a flame to burn out because there are other people in the world that can make you feel that way too. (less)

You ask, "What was the point of teaching teenagers that not all romances end happily or continue?".

The answer is in your question. Exactly that. Not all romances end in a happily ever after, especially when you are young and foolish and still learning about the world. It's very unlikely that the first person you fall in love with will be the last person you fall in love with, and it's unlikely that someone you date when you're 16 is the person you'll spend the rest of your life with. It's not impossible, it's just not at all likely.

Most books for teens are unrealistic and have teenagers falling in love with their soulmates. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but young, impressionable teens who are yet to gain worldly knowledge often take those messages to heart and believe that they will also find their soulmate in high school and that if they get dumped that its the end of the world.

This book, while giving out a lot of shit messages to young teens, does give out the important messages that it's okay if things don't work out, it's okay if your first love isn't your last, it's okay if you stop loving someone and start loving someone else, it's okay to feel confused or lost, it's okay if you don't find your soulmate immediately, and its okay to not be okay.(less)
