She is one of God's creatures and is wonderful in her own right. Don't read the book if you are freaked out. My tendency is to want to tell you to "get a grip" but I won't tell you that. Just enjoy the book. Pictures don't bite. You will miss out if you bypass the read.(less)

But there are numerous references to severe depression and suicidal thoughts. It was actually kind of jarring to read these passages in what would otherwise be a book to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. I think the life lessons the author discusses are valuable, but they are not presented in a way that is palatable or accessible for kids. A parent reading this aloud to a child should be cautioned that it gets very heavy and the language is very direct, not ambivalent at all, and there are some passages about spiritual beliefs. I would recommend the book to animal lovers whose lives have been changed and improved by intense bondings with pets and wild animals and appropriate for older teens.(less)
