I have seen this not only in The Duke's Children but also in other novels of his found on Gutenberg: he seems to omit the final digit of the year when giving a date for something. For example, "Then, in the early spring of 187—". Does anyone know why this is done? Is it just to make the novels more timeless?

I have now finished all the Barchester Chronicles and the Pallisers, as well as Cousin Henry and The Way We Live Now. Suppose I was only going to read one more Trollope novel (I just can't read them all!): WHICH ONE SHOULD IT BE?
