Some authors don't want to fight it out; even if s…moreIf a series book isn't supported by readership upon release, often the publisher will yank support. Some authors don't want to fight it out; even if some do, they don't always win. Rather than fight declining sales and lose book store preorders (the byline literally gets poisoned) they'll move on to another project....male authors don't usually, but female authors often have to re-start under a new byline to recover bookshop preorders. Getting time to continue a project without publisher support - for some that's a big gamble, and for others a last resort. I don't see projects getting abandoned voluntarily very often. Publishing is changing so very fast, everything is computerized, numbers are 'instant' and the staying power for pushing on - the incentive for the publisher to persist - is a vanishing practice, reduced in my observation from years and multiple titles, to months, to days, to nearly instantaneous disconnect. Short term rewards are driving the industry to the detriment of a long term build. It gets noticed, Stat, bought, stat, or it dies. Stat. I find the loss of vision very sad, a trend to be bucked, hard, but not all authors are in a position to do so.(less)
