Can I read this without reading the others?

Martha B. You certainly can, but the series is much better read in order. You lose the character development inherent in a series.

Was anyone else surprised and disappointed by the shift in writing style of Book 6? The first 5 books in the Maise Dobbs series enchanted me with the lyrical, complex sentences. Among the Mad in contrast was composed of much shorter, less involved sentences. I have purchased the entire series, based on my immense enjoyment of her initial books. I sincerely hope I will not need to cancel my pre-order of Book 17.
