Is this book at all related to Uprooted? The cover art alone makes them look like at least companion novels or something, (and I haven't read either), but judging by the synopsis they don't sound related.
Sandy You should definitely read Uprooted anyway, though. That book is absolutely brilliant.

I followed the instructions to the letter, telling the nice lady manning booth the secret code. She gave me a wink, then ducked under the table and pulled out a Not-For-Sale, For-Promotional-Use-Only, Do-Not-Publish-Quotes, This-Is-Not-Final copy.

My google-fu isn't turning up anything with the name "Staryk" in folklore. Is the name her own creation (winters are stark)? Or a translation of something? Or just too obscure to really show up on the internet?
Honoria Granger Apparently the word stem star- or stary- in Slavic languages means “ancient” or words to that effect. So “Staryk” could simply mean “ancient people.”

After reading the first couple of chapters, it feels like it's geared more toward the young adult reader. Is that the case, or is it definitely a book for "grownups", that would make for a good book club discussion?

It's about paying debts, about the meaning of gifts, about sacrifice and things like that.

It happens that all the main protagonists are smart and strong young women. But while that's a plus in recommending it for young adults I don't think it makes it a young adult novel. (less)
