Is this book at all related to Uprooted? The cover art alone makes them look like at least companion novels or something, (and I haven't read either), but judging by the synopsis they don't sound related.
Sandy You should definitely read Uprooted anyway, though. That book is absolutely brilliant.

I followed the instructions to the letter, telling the nice lady manning booth the secret code. She gave me a wink, then ducked under the table and pulled out a Not-For-Sale, For-Promotional-Use-Only, Do-Not-Publish-Quotes, This-Is-Not-Final copy.

My google-fu isn't turning up anything with the name "Staryk" in folklore. Is the name her own creation (winters are stark)? Or a translation of something? Or just too obscure to really show up on the internet?
Honoria Granger Apparently the word stem star- or stary- in Slavic languages means “ancient” or words to that effect. So “Staryk” could simply mean “ancient people.”

There were a couple brief mentions of rape (Irina's great-great-grandmother was raped by a Staryk knight during a midwinter's knight raid) but it is only mentioned in passing and there are no sex scenes, consensual or otherwise. I would say this book is appropriate for ages 13 and above.(less)
