Is anyone having issues with the time line, structure of this long read? I see nothing but praise and I'm wondering if it's just grumpy old me.

The fourth part, written from the perspective of the father, is the strongest in the book IMHO, and really ties the whole book together.(less)

I felt that, even at an early age, Amar exhibited some type of learning disability with, perhaps, emotional overlays. Since the parents had been used to two successful, high-achieving daughters, they could not or would not acknowledge that possibility. I was surprised that in all his schooling, none of Amar's teachers had recommended he be tested by a child study team. Anyone agree?

Although ADHD is often associated with hyperactivity and lack of attention, it is actually a condition that involves self-regulation, both physically and emotionally. As children they can be more "sensitive" and have difficulty coping with problems, even ones that seem small to most people. They are also very impulsive and stubborn. Layla describes Amar in this way when she is searching for a book and he exhibits and described in such a way throughout the book. They are still "smart" but don't do well in school due to inability to regulate. Those with untreated ADHD often grow older and turn to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms and dealing with feelings of ineptitude.(less)
