The author wrote of a man from 1818 named John Cleves Symmes who declared his intent to lead a voyage to the interior of the earth to prove that it was hollow and habitable. In the end, Symmes was considered a loon who wasted his life chasing fairy tales of underground lands. But before that he sparked the imagination of many.
