Murakami is quite popular in Germany. It is usually the one possible candidate for the literature nobel price Germans with some interest in literature know and suggest. A translation of a Murakami novel is a save bet for a publisher because it will sell. In the past they did not always translate it directly from the Japanese version but used the English translation for a German translation but that did also change after some controversion about the quality of such indirect translations. So there is also no reason to wait for the English version.

It also looks like the German version is splitt in two parts. (The second part will be released in April, that is too early for a real second part.) So we have to pay around 52 Euros for one book if we want to read it when it is new on the market. That makes a quick translation highly profitable.(less)
