Both do a good job of introducing the universe, so it's also ok to read one and then, after a long gap, read the other-- there are enough reminders/world-building that the reader doesn't need to remember a lot of technical details between the series.(less)

While I think there's certainly a wide swath of teens who would enjoy the series, nothing really struck me as YA, in terms of YA as a genre.(less)
