I've read a few volumes of One Piece and at first i liked its high energy and childishness, but it is starting to get a little annoying and monotonous. Does it change or vary its tone later in the series?

It doesn't really come into its own until the Arlong Park arc. I would say if that arc doesn't win you over, then yes, it's probably not for you. :)(less)
