The humans originally came from Earth in a spaceship and brought a lot of advanced tech with them. This is the fictional science element. Then they land on Erna, a planet with a mystical/magical force (the fantasy element) which the technology reacts poorly to. Much of the story concerns itself with this crash between the two elements, (more so early on than later), and therefore any description of it needs to acknowledge both. I find that 'high fantasy with some sci-fi in it' is a reasonably accurate categorization.(less)
