not quite. i would say absolutely no!
in this short story he goes against another russian author (Lev Tolstoy) and interpreted him like the character of the Doctor.
i mean, Tolstoy always says that the soul of a man can stand throuth reality and, neverthless Tolstoy lived his life in abundance and never knew a suffer. He promoted the idea of escapism and Chekhov in all his books rejected this tenet. In the "gooseberry" he showed the essence of the man who was wallowed in the dream of a private house and at the end of his days buy its, eat disgusting gooseberry and believe that gooseberry is very tasty! For another example in "The Cherry Orchard" family did not want to make an effort and keep living with understanding of approaching downfall. Chekhov hate humility.
This is not the one cause which shows Chekhov had opposited Tolstoy.
also it sees in Tolstoy's question - "How Much Land Does a Man Need?"
Tolstoy answered - "only six feet long" Chekhov's remark - "there is only enough for dead! a man needs the whole Earth and even more!(less)
