I'm from Russia, from the author himself. in Russia, the people to show their respect for the older, use the name and patronymic, for example if the teacher called "Anna Sergeeva Makarovna" students will call her "Anna Makarovna". If you come to visit a friend that you will call his mom is not just "Daria", call her- "Daria Tikhonovna." I hope I have helped you.(less)

The sequel 'Day Watch' really was written by two authors, Lukyanenko and Vasiliev, and it showed.
I think you impression was due to the fact that it's one of the earliest books by Sergei Lukyanenko, and I can't say it's a masterpiece, to put it mildly XD The ideas, the plot is great, the realization - not so much.(less)
