All the copies of the Harlem cycle I've read use the euphemism "mother-raper" in place of "mother- f**ker". Does anybody know if this was something the publisher did or made Himes do in order to get the books published?

Montreal Meany I just finished reading the book and was struck by this. I doubt many would see "mother-raper" as a euphemism today. In Warren Miller's "The Cool World" (no relation to the 1992 live action & animated movie that got some of the lowest ratings I've ever seen), the verb was "motherin'" though I don't remember if "motherer" was used as a noun. (less)
