Not specifically about this book, but about the series in general. Does the characterisation get any more subtle as the series progresses? Because if I have to read many more drawn out descriptions of 'DI Sweet-Eater' and 'DI Chain-Smoker', I don't think I will carry on. I really like the writing other than this, I like the setting, I like the whole 'Tartan Noir' thing. But the 'interesting' tics are ... not.

Did anyone else find the amount of hours worked by DS McRae excessive; along with the amount of hours slept too small to exist on? It is the one thing I could not reconcile as I read them. McRae is ordered to work so much that I never knew if 8-half meant 8:30 a.m or 8:30 p.m. It annoyed me in both books.
