Gerritt was his boss and controlled everything he did. I don't think he was the brightest person either, he seemed to be a little simpleminded. (less)

The district attorney, Hotaling, seemed particularly hostile to Mary during the trial. Was that just misogyny or did he have a particular purpose? Some of his reactions would have been more appropriate for a defense attorney.
