That said, yes the overall nonsensical plot line does stay the same as one cannot completely retcon cannon with a novel. (less)

I don't think it was necessarily playing tricks on him, but you could definately think of it that way.(less)

I think Johnson took risks, some paid off, some were pretty bad. I didn't like Luke's arc, but that's also what JJ set up in The Force Awakens. I did like the idea that Rey was a nobody, and I was hoping to see more about the love triangle. Watching fight with the royal guards was something that I enjoyed. Canto Bight was terrible, same with Leia flying in space.

I actually think JJ's 2 movies were far worse. They were a completely nonsensical version of the original movies.

For example we get a new Death Star in TFA, which is actually a planet (everything needs to be bigger and more powerful!) that can destroy a galactic government in a matter of seconds... Are all the relevant planets in the galaxy in the same solar system? Because even light takes a long time to travel between system... hence hyperspace travel. The Old Republic was comprised of millions of planets, the New Republic was what? 5?

And don't even get me started with The Rise of Things Just Happening, the story of fetching quests across the galaxy. But hey, that scene with horses storming a Star Destroyer looked cool. If you take whatever JJ took to write that script.
