I'm confused... The Prefect was previously listed as Revelation Space: 1.5 but now it's Prefect Dreyfus Emergency: 1 and Elysium Fire is Prefect Dreyfus Emergency: 2. Since I haven't read the Revelation Space series yet, I'm left baffled as to how these two Prefect Dreyfus books relate to Revelation Space and in what order I should read all of them???

I was gifted this book (Elysium Fire). Will I be able to read it, without reading the previous works of Alastair Reynolds?

His other works lend great oversight information into the shared world but are absolutely not required for either The Prefect or Elysium Fire. I’d recommend reading The Prefect before this just to have a better depth on the main characters.(less)

Is it the characters that make the technology creepy and sinister or is it the Author? I cant recall any other sci-fi writer except maybe Charles Stross that always seem to evoke that impending sense of doom

He explains just e…moreFor me, I think the creepy/horror factor with Reynolds comes from his expert timing when he reveals information throughout a story. He explains just enough of a concept to keep the plot moving, but leaves a strong sense of mystery which I find more satisfying than having all the answers up-front.

I think Elysium Fire had less mystery than Reynold's other stories (like the Revelation Space novels) but it was still very enjoyable.(less)
