Would this book be appropriate for 11-14 years old? I understand that this is a serious book, but would a tween or early teen be able to comprehend and enjoy this book?

Since it's written from a child's point of view, it never gets too graphic, and it's definitely not anything a tween or young teen hasn't encountered already in other books or watching the news.
