He has some recurring characters but not really a series writer although all are based in Florida. Tim Dorsey is also quite funny, with his Serge Storms series, although the formula is repeated over and over in the later books. Nelson DeMille's John Corey is good for several one-liners per novel, the first one (Plum Island) is probably the best one, His "Cuban Affair" also good with a wisecracking and likable protagonist. Tom Lowe's Sean OBrien is a modern day Travis McGhee and these books are well worth a look. James Lee Burke's daughter Alafair writes some great standalone thrillers as well as the Ellie Hatcher series and collaborations with Mary Higgins Clarke, all worth a look.

In a more serious vein, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels and James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series are a cut above in terms of writing quality. Others worth a look; James W Hall's Thorn series, Mark Pryor's Hugo Marston series, Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series.(less)
