It was often difficult to choose which pronoun to use--we finally agreed to use male pronouns for Frank and female pronouns for Emma. We did not dwell on Emma's male vs. female issues mainly because she didn't herself. She simply did what she had to do. Her inspiration came from the Fanny Campbell novel and Fanny did the exact same thing. You have to remember that in the mid-1800s, women's roles were very limited.
